Social Stratification in the Oh-So Great Gatsby Among numerous themes, including; the ‘American dream’, isolation, hope, love and various others, in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s acclaimed novel The Great Gatsby, the allure of social stratification is the most significant element. Social stratification is a concept that refers to the way in which a society groups different people into stratas, or layers, based on wealth, power, and social status. The Great Gatsby is an accomplished piece of social commentary, showing American life in the Roaring Twenties. When he came back from visiting in the East Egg, he says he â€Å"wanted the world to be in uni form (Fitzgerald, 2)†. It is apparent, from the beginning that class difference will play a large role in how the book transpires, and so it does. Daisy, Tom, and a friend of theirs, Jordan Baker, are at the top of the novel’s social empire. Their families have had money for years, and for that reason, they are the Old Money. As exposed in the novel, they spend their ‘old money’ very freely and tend to entertain themselves with parties, etc. With high class, they choose their acquaintances based upon that as well. The social differentiation shown here is that they did not care how much money people in the 1920s (like Gatsby) had in their pockets. It was where and how they got the money, that mattered to these elites. Throughout the novel, Jay Gatsby strives to reassure Daisy that he has more wealth than when they first fell in love. Moving next to Nick, Daisy’s cousin, Gatsby invests in his house to make it magnificent, all for her welcoming. Gatsby’s hope to win Daisy’s love had changed course when Daisy figured out that he had not been born into money. For example, In Mai Sai, brothels have been known to pay police every month for each girl who is brought in or in order to avoid police raids (Obokata, 2006,54). Back in 2003, fifty police officers in the Bangkok Metropolitan Police Department were taken off active duty for accepting bribes from brothel owners (Obokata, 2006,54). Some police officers even participate in the actual trafficking of girls, like transporting women from Myanmar to brothels within Thailand (Obokata, 2005, 54). In these instances, trafficking victims are being exploited by not only their employers but also by the police (Gugic, 2014, 366). Thai police officers are paid low salaries, which makes them more likely to turn to bribery and corruption (Tarancon, 2013, 72). Even politicians and political parties have been known to take proceeds from the sex industry, while using its ser vices for free (Davy,2014,803; Opanovych,2016,108). Its not always good choices, but they have to be made. There will always be consequences, whether its bad or good. Throughout the story, Leeland Lee has to make a lot of choices. Where to live, where to work and when to work. All the different choices he made, put him in the position he is now. Leeland Lee is an awkward-looking young boy. The reason I believe that the author is third-person is because she refers to Leeland Lee as he or him. The author is omniscient because she knows almost everything that is going on, except for the future. His conflicts that come from the outside is economic issues and work-related issues, seeing as when he gets a job he cant keep it.s The way I interpreted the story, the themes are choices and what the consequences or advantages of those choices are. The difference between these two concepts rests in the fact that hearing is unconscious but it takes a conscious effort to listen. Listening transcends the realm of hearing and is more complex. In the case of hearing, we do not make an effort to hear something because hearing is spontaneous. On the other hand, listening requires a special form of concentration on the part of the listener that is not required in the case of hearing. Unfortunately, most people confuse both concepts to mean the same thing, thereby using it interchangeably as a form of synonym. More than ever, professionals need to develop their listening skills. This is because they have to understand what their client is saying so as to understand the real situation in question. Generally, professionals hold the responsibility to listen to their clients in order to know how they can be of help to them. Such professions entail a daily interpersonal encounters and success in such profession rests on the professional’s ability to listen in order to really understand what is required in the given situation. No matter how good a professional is, without effective listening skill or ability, the professional is as good as not being a professional. Such a field that requires effective listening skills is the legal profession. As a lawyer, one is daily involved in interpersonal encounters that require basic skill in listening. This is informed by the fact that the lawyer in the discharge of his duties can not just rely on the client for effective communication. Oftentimes, the client is disillusioned and emotional and so the lawyer has to be able to not only hear what the client is saying but to make a conscious effort in order to be able to interpret the message that is being passed across. Due to the fact that success in the legal profession is based on the acquisition of necessary information, the legal practitioner must seek to fully understand what the client is saying, meaning or implying. When a professional listens, the person relaying the information feels respected and valued, making them feel that they have something they can contribute to the discussion. This goes a long way in boosting the client’s boldness and this allows for a better interpersonal relationship between the professional and the client. In the general sense, interpersonal encounters require five basic learning functions. These are namely listening to comprehend, listening to support, listening to analyze, listening to appreciate and listening to discern. I will make an attempt to explain how each function aids the legal practitioner in the practice of his/her profession. In the legal practice, the legal practitioner must learn to listen to the client in order to fully comprehend what the client is saying. This becomes important because the success of the case is based of the proper understanding of the issue at hand. The professional must be patient enough to carefully listen to the client in order to grasp what is needed to know about the case. In addition to this, the legal practitioner must be able to listen in order to support the client in bring out information that the client might not consider relevant to the case. This becomes important because the client might be ignorant of some things in the legal profession and so the legal practitioner holds the responsibility of making sure that the client is guided in his thought so that the required information can be acquired. Furthermore, the legal practitioner must possess the ability to listen in order to analyze the information that is provided by the client. As expected, the client might give some information that needs scrutiny and evaluation. The lawyer is put in a vantage position if he/she able to listen properly. Bringing Ethics Into Business free essay sample

Outline the arguments for and against bringing ethics and corporate social responsibility into business The question of whether or not to bring ethics and corporate social responsibility into business is an ongoing one. â€Å"Business ethics is the study of proper business policies and practices regarding potentially controversial issues such as bribery, discrimination and corporate social responsibility† (www. investopedia. com/terms/b/business-ethics. asp). The objective of this essay is to discuss the arguments for and against bringing ethics and corporate social responsibility into business. There are three arguments against bringing ethics into business. The first argument is that the availability of free markets and the pursuit of profit can be guaranteed benefit to all members of the community (Velasquez, 1998). This means that regardless of ethics, companies can contribute to the production requirements of the public. For example, there are some companies in Saudi which contribute to the provision of some modern medical equipment to the general hospitals to improve the health care. Most companies have as their target only profit and the reduction of costs without paying attention to the interests of society. For instance, some factories flow chemical waste in rivers and lakes, therefore affecting fish, which is considered an important food source for humans. The second argument is the loyal agent’s argument (Velasquez, 1998). In some cases in business people have the right to reject something which is conflict with their ethics. For example, a Muslim woman was working in a clothing store and the boss asked her to take off her headscarf and adorn herself to attract customers, but the woman told him that her religion did not allow her to do that and the manager tried forcing her. Then she left her job and resorted to the law and won the case. In terms of the counter-argument, behaviour in business is covered by law of agency which states that in business, ethics have to be considered. The third argument is related to the law. Velasquez (1998) says that the law is all that is required in order to be ethical. This means that it should be enough for people to obey the law but the law and ethics are not the same for everyone. When it comes to the counter-argument there are aspects in ethics which is in some countries are legal but other countries would consider immoral. The laws of Saudi Arabia for example, require that business discriminate against women in ways people in other countries would not agree are ethical. However, there are four arguments in favour of ethics in business. The first argument is that all business should be based on morality which is achieved by humans (Corballis, 2011). This means that each person has factors that help him to do the right. The second argument argues that business cannot exist without ethics standards (Corballis, 2011). This means that standards of morality should be available for the continuation of work. There is a counter argument to this. There is a counter argument to this because business could collapse if stakeholders behaved unethically. The third argument is that ethics produce profit. According to Corballis (2011), there is evidence that certain companies have combined the ethical and the economic together. They make a profit and they are apparently ethical such as Hewlett- Packard, Levi Strauss and Starbucks. In terms of the counter-argument, this is a cynical view because a company which has ethics should not necessarily say that. The last argument is reward and punishment in business. Companies that have ethics they will be rewarded in turn will boycott companies that do not behave morally (Corballis, 2011). There is evidence of this: people still believe The Body Shop is totally ethical because the owner of this factory who is a woman was based in the manufacture of its products on natural products. However, when the company grew and it became big, it was coveted by one of the major companies which bought the company from the owner. Therefore, they did not change the principal name and people believe it still has the same ethics. When it comes to the counter-argument, companies pay a huge amount of money to specialists for publicity and advertising to hide their unethical dealings, such as HSBC. In conclusion, this essay has discussed above the arguments for and against bringing ethics and corporate social responsibility into business. From the above arguments, it can be seen that the arguments which support the importance of a morality in business are the most convincing because business without ethics will collapse. To analyze the strategic analysis by reviewing the current market performance it is essential to analyze the Swot analysis. Strengths One of the biggest strength of Cadbury is that it is a world leader in chocolates. It has a wide distribution channel due to which it has its presence in more than two hundred countries. The company has strong brand loyalty and customer loyalty. It has strong branding over the years that helps in attracting larger customer base (Hollensen 2015). It has strong marketing and advertising campaigns and also has an employee strength of 71,000 employees that helps in creating effective products that gains popularity all over the world. Weakness Cadbury faced downfall in the sale due to decline in quality and detection of worms. The other weakness is its rural distribution.
